Our fitness program offers a variety of entertaining, non-contact fitness and wellness classes designed to build muscular and cardiovascular strength while improving flexibility and general athleticism.

FIGHTHOUSE MMA

Our martial arts training program challenges members to maximize their potential, from beginner to professional. Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world and a full-contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, using techniques from various combat sports and martial arts such as boxing, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Karate, Taekwondo, Capoeira, Sambo, and Kung Fu. Our in-house professional, Jadyson Costa, teaches BJJ and Muay Thai, in which he holds black belts, as well as Boxing to beginners. Jadyson also trains professional fighters to improve their techniques and fitness levels.

At FIGHTHOUSE, we offer people in Western Michigan of all ages and training levels fun and challenging fitness and wellness classes in a modern, clean gym with fun, motivated instructors. Our members, once qualified, may train in our FIGHTHOUSE MMA™ program and learn martial arts and the art of combat from some of the best instructors in the world.

WHAT IF I JUST WANT TO GET IN SHAPE?

We created our FIGHTHOUSE FITNESS™ program to offer a variety of entertaining, non-contact fitness and wellness classes designed to build muscular and cardiovascular strength while improving flexibility and general athleticism. Overall fitness and mental wellbeing are fundamentally important for everyone, regardless of whether they practice martial arts.

 

WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE CONTACT SPORTS?

Our FIGHTHOUSE FITNESS™ program offers a variety of entertaining, non-contact fitness and wellness classes designed to build muscular and cardiovascular strength while improving flexibility and general athleticism.

 

SHOULD I EAT BEFORE I COME TO CLASS?

Maybe a very small snack an hour or more before class, but we recommend avoid eating any more before your class.

 

CAN I BRING MY CELL PHONE INTO CLASS?

Cell phones and other personal belongings are not allowed in class and can be safeguarded in your locker or left in the hallway cubicles during class! Please advise your instructor before class if you have an emergency situation.

 

DO YOU OFFER STUDENT DISCOUNTS?

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?

Clean attire that you can move freely in. We like clothing that is moisture-wicking because we sweat - A LOT! Please be respectful in your clothing choices.

 

 

MARTIAL ARTS

 

WHAT IS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS?

MMA is a full-contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, using techniques from various combat sports and martial arts such as boxing, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Karate, Taekwondo, Capoeira, Sambo, and Kung Fu.

 

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING?

Regardless of whether you joined for our FIGHTHOUSE MMA™ program to train in one or more martial arts or simply to get or stay in shape with our FIGHTHOUSE FITNESS™ program, physical fitness and mental wellness are fundamental to the FIGHTHOUSE ™ lifestyle we practice and the benefits are huge:

DO I HAVE TO TRAIN IN ALL THE MARTIAL ARTS?

Not at all; many of our members come solely for the physical and mental benefits of our FIGHTHOUSE FITNESS™ program.

 

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME TO FITNESS CLASS OR MMA TRAINING?

Here’s a good check list of what to have with you for class:

 

  • Comfortable clothing that you can easily move in. Gis are available for purchase, when required.

  • Sweat towel (we have sweat towels for rent as well)

  • Water bottle

 

 

YOGA

 

NEW TO YOGA?

Tight gluts and hamstrings? Can’t reach your toes? That’s why we do yoga! We weren’t super flexible when we first began yoga either! There are so many variations we can offer you to help find the poses that feel just right.

 

PREFER NOT TO BE PHYSICALLY TOUCHED?

Our instructors are trained to adapt their instruction to the individual needs of each participant/yogi. We discreetly ask at the beginning of each class to respect each yogi’s personal space according to their preference.

 

CAN'T DO ALL THE POSES?

No one can do all possible yoga poses, and we don’t bring our ego to class anyway. The purpose of yoga is to enhance your physical and mental flexibility. Inner peace often comes from the incremental growth inherent in yoga. Our focus is on personal growth and wellbeing, not anyone’s arbitrary concept of perfection. Personal growth usually involves some level of discomfort, but only you decide how far you will step outside of your comfort zone each class.

 

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOGA?

 

Here are some of the most important:

● Greater mobility, flexibility and overall athletic performance

● Improved cardiovascular and circulatory health

● Enhanced sense of calm and clarity resulting in greater mental focus in general

● Improved strength and physical health

● Identify and discard mental habits that no longer serve you

 

 

WHY ARE SOME OF YOUR CLASSES HEATED?

In the winter, some of our classes are heated (between 85 and 90 degree Fahrenheit), and we never heat the room for kids and family classes. These are some common benefits of hot yoga:

● increased heart rate and metabolism causing increased calorie burning

● increased blood flow to the arms and legs bringing more blood to the muscles

● improved muscle tone and flexibility

● lowered stress from the experience of leaving one’s comfort zone during class

 

 

HOW HOT DOES IT GET?

Generally, in heated classes, the temperature of the room is approximately 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit, although we do offer gently heated and non-heated (beginners and restorative) classes. The heat, humidity, and physical intensity of the practice will cause you to sweat. So, it is particularly  important that stay hydrated. See the class descriptions for specific details on temperatures in each class.

 

IS EVERY CLASS THE SAME?

We ask each instructor to draw from their own personal experience and professional training to design their classes to meet the goals listed in the class descriptions.

 

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?

Plan to sweat, a lot, so we suggest moisture-wicking clothing that is clean and allows free and easy movement. Please be respectful in your clothing choices.

 

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO CLASS?

We suggest you bring these items to class:

  • Comfortable clothing that you can easily move in
  • Comfortable yoga mat (we have high quality mats for sale and basic mats are provided)
  • Sweat towel (we provide cooling towels after each heated class)
  • Full water bottle
  • Yogitoes or large sweat towel for your mat (we sell these also)

 

DO YOU RENT MATS?

Basic yoga mats are provided. We also sell yogitoes (mat sized towels with rubberized nubs on one side to hold it in place on your mat) and we provide cooling towels after each heated class.

Nino Shembri

PROFESSIONAL MMA FIGHTER (active)

GUEST TRAINER

 

FightHouse MMA is a proud affiliate school of Nino Schembri. Nino visits regularly to add new, exciting techniques to our curriculum. Antonio "Nino" Schembri is one of the most exciting grapplers to have ever stepped on a mat. Nino is a Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Carlos Gracie Junior. Nino made a name for himself as the "King of the Omoplata," a game he developed to emphasize his highly flexible and offensive guard game. Nino is also one of the first grapplers recorded using the 'lasso guard" and the "rubber guard." Nino is considered one of the best guard players to have ever competed in the sport of MMA. Gracie Magazine listed Nino as the second greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner of all time. In addition to his many accomplishments on the mat, he’s also noted for his knockout MMA win over Kazushi Sakuraba.

Jadyson Costa

PROFESSIONAL MMA FIGHTER (active)

INSTRUCTOR & TRAINER

 

Jadyson Costa is a full-time fitness instructor and MMA trainer and our resident MMA professional. Jadyson started training in martial arts at age 5 and is now a third degree black belt under Renato Tavares. Throughout his career, Jadyson has worked under the biggest names in the sport of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Jadyson was a member of the legendary Chute Boxe Academy in Curitiba renowned for producing devastating strikers. Chute Boxe was an elite training ground for Vale Tudo fighters, such as Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva, Murilo "Ninja" Rua and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Jadyson holds a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 3rd degree black belt and a Muay Thai Black Belt.

Johnny

PROFESSIONAL MMA FIGHTER (retired)

INSTRUCTOR & TRAINER

Johnny Grigware has over 20 years of experience in combat athletics. He first started boxing as a teenager and transitioned to kickboxing a few years later. In 2004, he joined the first MMA gym in West Michigan. He competed both as an amateur and professional in Mixed Martial Arts and is now recognized as one of the very best coaches in the state, producing some of Michigan’s top fighters. His knowledge is extensive and branches across the health, fitness, and nutrition field, holding a certification in massage as well.

Leah

INSTRUCTOR

 

Leah Kalemba brings her energetic fitness style to FIGHTHOUSE™, combining bag work, cardio and strength conditioning in an empowering 60 minute workout. With over 15 years of dance and fitness experience, Leah trained with our blackbelt coach Jadyson Costa to develop a non-contact beginner through intermediate fitness program inspired by boxing and other martial arts techniques. No experience, no problem, Leah will help you channel your inner fighter while torching calories and building muscle.
