Do you need to be in shape to join Muay Thai? No. Muay Thai is an intense cardiovascular activity, however, we train you to get into shape or if you are already in shape, into higher levels of fitness. Muay Thai Basics are done at your own pace, and the core of basics is learning the technique, which is more effectively learned at a slower pace. We are helping you increase your cardio fitness, but we understand the necessity of going at your own pace to prevent injury. Do you need to have previous martial arts experience to join Muay Thai class? No, you do not need previous experience to join the Muay Thai class. Of course, the more athletic you are and the better muscle memory and conditioning you have, the faster you will progress in Muay Thai. In some cases it is actually better not to have any experience in traditional styles, as bad habits and technique are hard to unlearn. Remember, Muay Thai can be taught to most individuals because of the simplicity of the techniques, which is one reason why it is so effective. Is Muay Thai safe? Yes, the Muay Thai Basics class is great for beginners because of the precautions taken to prevent injury: warm up routines, working on Muay Thai pads, and training under the experienced supervision of the instructor. Our instructors have many years of experience teaching group classes and are very well-versed in safety precautions for an injury-free class. Additionally, there is no sparring and minimal contact with your partner at the beginner level. Muay Thai at the Intermediate and Fighters level requires much greater control and responsibility, as well as heavier protective equipment. What do I need to bring to my first Muay Thai trial class? Come at least 20 minutes before class starts. Muay Thai practitioners wear shorts (Muay Thai shorts) for greater range of motion in their legs. On top, you can either wear a tank top, tee-shirt, and/or rash guards. Practice is barefoot and no shoes are permitted. We recommend getting yourself a pair of hand wraps to protect your wrists underneath the gloves. We do have gloves and other equipment for you to borrow, but eventually you should acquire your own pair. Anklets can be worn, especially if you had any ankle injuries in the past. If you have your own pair of boxing gloves, please bring them. Feel free to ask the instructor or the staff at the front counter for guidelines on equipment. Is Muay Thai good for self defense? Absolutely! Learning one of the most effective stand-up striking systems martial arts has ever produced will help you defend against assult. Muay Thai defense is effective against unarmed strikes, as practitioners train to keep a guard, which allows for the minimum response time to prevent an assailant from contacting vital parts of your body. Like most martial arts, Muay Thai helps develop an awareness of your surroundings, excellent hand-eye coordination, and quick response time. (Please note that note that Muay Thai training does not incorporate defense against armed assailants.) Do you train women in Muay Thai? Yes, all our Fighthouse classes are co-educational. Women receive the same exact training and attitude as their male counterparts. We take pride in not only teaching women Muay Thai, but empowering women with a life skill. Do you train kids or minors? It depends on the individual. Minors under the age of 17 need our consent and parental or guardian consent. Generally we do not cater to those under the age of 14 in group classes. However we do for private training so please inquire by either sending us an email at info@fighthouse.com or by calling (212) 807-9202. What equipment and gear do I need for Intermediate Muay Thai? Intermediate levels of Muay Thai and higher require hand wraps, 16-ounce sparring gloves, a groin guard (Thai Style cup preferred), a molded mouth guard, heavy shin pads, and Muay Thai headgear. This equipment can be purchased at the front desk. | ||||||||||||
